Depo Provera
There are several ways to prevent pregnancy and the birth control shot is one option. Depo Provera, also known as The Birth Control Shot, is a method of prescription birth control and is available through injection. This method of birth control protects against pregnancy up to 14 weeks by preventing ovulation. Prevention against ovulation means that there is no egg available for sperm. There are two different types of birth control shots, but both basically work the same way and provide the same protection with the few differences.
The original formula Depo Provera Shot must be injected into a muscle, either the buttocks or the upper arm. This shot must be used four times a year, every 11 to 13 weeks, to maintain the high effectiveness rate of this birth control method. You will be protected immediately after obtaining the shot. The second Depo Provera Shot is called Depo-subQ Provera 104 Injection and it is the newer version of the shot. It doesn’t have to be injected into the muscle but rather under the skin using a smaller needle, which may be less painful. Depo-subQ Provera 104 must be injected into the abdomen or the thigh four times a year, every 12 to 14 weeks, and like the original Depo Provera shot, it protects against pregnancy right away. The effectiveness of Depo Provera is 97 percent to 99.7 percent. This means that if used properly, one to three women out of one hundred will become pregnant in one year while using this form of birth control. As mentioned above, Depo Provera protects against pregnancy up to 14 weeks so plan your shots in advance. If you miss a shot after more than 14 weeks make sure to use some other form of birth control like condoms. If you get your first shot within the first five days of your period, Depo Provera protects immediately against pregnancy. Using a back-up method is suggested if you obtain your first shot after the first five days of your period. It is recommended to use the back-up method of birth control for the following seven days. Advantages of Depo Provera shot:
- Injection is required only four times a year The Depo Provera shot doesn’t protect against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) so be sure to use latex condoms if you don’t have a monogamous sexual relationship. If you are allergic to latex you can choose from variety of non-latex condoms made of polyurethane. Durex Avanti is one of option. Also, Trojan has non-latex condoms in their product line which are called Trojan Supra
