According to medical studies nonoxynol-9 (N-9) provides some protection against pregnancy. However, N-9 does not reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases because it may irritate the vagina or penis. So there’s no reason to choose spermicidal condoms over other kinds.

What`s Nonoxynol-9 and Spermicide

Nonoxynol-9, also known as N-9, is used as an ingredient in spermicidal creams, foams and lubricants. Spermicide is a substance used for killing sperm. Spermicide has no flavor, and is non-staining and unscented lubricant.

We tested condoms lubricated with spermicide on several volunteer couples. After our tests we found that it is not recommended to use condoms lubricated with spermicide more than once a day. Tested couples also noticed an excess of redness, itching, irritation and similar on genital area shortly after using condoms lubricated with spermicide. Our tests also discovered that women tend to be more sensitive to condoms lubricated with spermicide than men. They have no additional benefit in preventing pregnancy, have a shorter shelf life, and may cause urinary-tract infections in young women.
